It's not time for safe. It's time for great.
DAVID TEEMS LIVES IN FRANKLIN, TENNESSEE with his wife, Benita. They have two sons. Shad, 23, is a student at MTSU, and Adam, 30. Adam and his wife, Katie, have three children—Julian, 4, Evie, 3, and Audrey, not yet 1.

David grew up in Atlanta, Georgia. His father was a worship leader in the church he grew up in, a small Christian church in downtown Atlanta. Saved at 9 years old, David left the church out of high school. He attended Georgia State University where he received a BA in Psychology. He then went to graduate school with the hope of becoming a clinical psychologist. After one semester of graduate school, he began playing music full time in local Atlanta venues. He abandoned the academic life and the dream of counseling to pursue music full-time. Seven years later, he met Mylon LeFevre, who led David back to God in the summer of 1981. He left the Atlanta music scene, and it wasn't long after this time that David felt a call on his life for full-time ministry.

He met Benita some time in 1983. Two weeks after they first met he asked her to marry him. She said “yes”. They were married in 1984 in a ceremony presided over by Mylon LeFevre. Now, almost 25 years later, David is still married, still in love, and still crazy about his wife. Their relationship has empowered his music ministry for the 24 years it has been in existence.

David has recorded 7 albums, of which three are a type of therapy for the soul. HOPE, and MORE HOPE are scripture and music. IN THE MOURNING, by a similar treatment, was created with the grieving in mind. It became clear to David a few years back that his desire to counsel and to help people with their inward suffering found a vent through his music. He says he would have taken no other path, that God obviously knows what he's doing.

David's passion is deeply literary. His first book, TO LOVE IS CHRIST, was released in 2005 by Thomas Nelson Publishers. David has kept close to 300 journals over the years and intends to write his way into his future (though he doesn't intend to abandon the music). On 26 November 2008, David signed a contract with Harvest House Publishers for book number two, AND THEREBY HANGS A TALE. It will be available early 2010.

As far as the current droop in culture and its effect on the general business of art, spirituality, and wordcraft, David says, "It's not time for safe. It's time for great."

These are confusing times we live in, and the questions we are currently asking ourselves have no easy answers. But, existing both inside and outside the flow of culture, as only spiritual works have the power to do, the music David has produced over the years, and the books he is writing address these very things.

Whether you are reading David from a book, listening to his music on your iPod, watching him from some stage, whether in the drift of some intimate worship song, or within the sweet hush of the Scripture he recites, the experience is as life-altering as it is unforgettable. As someone once wrote concerning him, a piece of promotional scribble he particularly likes,

"Poet and medicineman, all heart and half crazy, that's David Teems."
